James P. Knell is the Chairman of the SIMA umbrella of companies that includes SIMA Corporation (Real Estate Acquisitions), SIMA Management Corporation (Asset/Property Management and Leasing) and West Coast Athletic Clubs (High End Athletic Clubs).
Mr. Knell is a 1974 graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has a bachelor’s degree in education and began his career as a teacher. Mr. Knell entered the real estate business in the late 1970s as an independent investor. He acquired numerous residential properties in the Santa Barbara area, the Pacific Northwest, and the southeastern United States.
In 1984 Mr. Knell formed SIMA Corporation to redevelop and manage the properties he had acquired. With an eye for identifying distressed properties suitable for profitable rehabilitation and long-term ownership, SIMA acquired extensive commercial and retail property holdings throughout the United States. During this time, he became a workout/bankruptcy specialist who orchestrated over 30 recapitalizations. He became involved with several institutional investor groups in the late 1980s to help in the restructuring of failed limited partnerships. His relationships with these groups continue today.
He has since steadily and prudently grown the portfolio of assets and companies to the benefit of his investors and to better serve the community.
